History of the journal

Sinéctica, Electronic Journal of Education was founded in 1992 as a print publication, originating from an initiative promoted by students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Sciences at ITESO. The original proposal was put forward by Dr. Luis González Martínez, then program coordinator, and inspired by the collective academic work led by Professor Guadalupe Valdés (Pitina). From its inception, the journal sought to establish itself as a space for critical reflection on educational processes across diverse sociocultural contexts.

Two years later, under the editorial leadership of Dr. Rocío de Aguinaga, Sinéctica was formally incorporated into the academic activities of the then Department of Education, consolidating its institutional character and strengthening its scholarly vocation.

With the publication of its twentieth issue, the journal welcomed Alejandra García Bado as Editor-in-Chief. Beginning in 2007, a process of editorial restructuring was undertaken, incorporating new information technologies and enabling the transition to a digital format. That same year, Brígida Botello Aceves joined the editorial team with the aim of advancing the journal’s professionalization and facilitating its inclusion in the then Mexican Index of Scientific and Technological Research Journals (Conacyt), later renamed the Mexican Journal Classification System in Science and Technology.

Throughout its trajectory, Sinéctica has consolidated its position as an academic journal specializing in education, published biannually and featuring contributions from both national and international authors. Its editorial evolution has strengthened not only the quality of its scholarly content but also its graphic design and accessibility, positioning the journal as a reference within the educational field.

In 2016, under the direction of Dr. Claudia Arufe and with Brígida Botello serving as editor—a position she continues to hold to this day—the journal migrated its website to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, marking a decisive step toward the professionalization of its editorial processes and the expansion of its international reach. During this consolidation phase, Daniela Rico Cudurie joined the team as programmer and designer.

In 2017, the journal entered a new phase as its editorial and budgetary processes were incorporated into ITESO’s Office of Publications, directed by Manuel Verduzco. The role of Editor-in-Chief, responsible for academic leadership and institutional relations, was assumed by Dr. Luis Felipe Gómez of the Department of Psychology, Education, and Health. From 2021 to October 2022, the journal was directed by Dr. Guadalupe Valdés.

Since November 2022, the journal has been directed by Dr. Yasmani Santana Colín. During this stage, efforts have been focused on updating the journal’s editorial scope and strengthening and expanding its international academic engagement.

More than three decades after its founding, Sinéctica remains committed to critical reflection and the production of rigorous knowledge on education, understood as a complex phenomenon unfolding within diverse sociocultural settings.
