The overall objective of this study was to explore psychological distress among female university students who sought psychological support during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Centro Universitario de la Ciénega (Ocotlán, La Barca, and Atotonilco campuses). Using a mixed-methods approach and an observational, exploratory, and descriptive design, the SCL-90-R was administered to 207 students recruited through nonprobability purposive sampling, all of whom had sought support through the institution’s Psychological Care Program. Quantitative results showed elevated scores for anxiety and somatization, consistent with previously documented gender-related differences in psychological distress. Students from the Division of Biotechnological Development obtained significantly higher scores on paranoid ideation and the Positive Symptom Distress Index than students from the other academic divisions. Qualitatively, 57.5% of the reported reasons for seeking psychological support were related to emotional and mental health problems, particularly sadness, fatigue, and loneliness, in the context of caregiving overload and limited support networks. The study highlights the need to strengthen comprehensive mental health care programs in higher education institutions to address the potential long-term effects on student mental health.
