Es posible que el mayor desafío del siglo XXI sea el de la justicia. La disputa por el derecho culminó exitosamente al finalizar el siglo XVIII. El siglo XIX consagró la independencia y el XX fue testigo del triunfo de la ciencia y la apoteosis de la tecnología, aunque aun nos falta mucho por ver. Al fin de ese siglo contemplamos el fin de la opresión del socialismo real y el entonces proclamado triunfo de las libertades. Ahora vemos con claridad las consecuencias y situaciones no resueltas por el derecho, la ciencia y en general por la sola razón. El secularismo, la diversidad, el liberalismo y el pragmatismo no alcanzan aun para re- solver de manera decisiva la contradicción entre libertad y justicia, entre igualdad y equidad.
