En este artículo se analizan los fundamentos teóricos en los que se sustenta el desarrollo de sistemas de monitoreo y evaluación de la calidad de la educación y se describen los modelos de evaluación más representativos del ámbito educativo. El artículo se propuso dar respuesta a las siguientes interrogantes: ¿qué implica monitorear y evaluar los sistemas educativos?, ¿qué papel desempeñan los modelos de evaluación, los indicadores y los estándares en estos procesos?, ¿cuáles son las fuentes de las que se derivan los indicadores educativos?, y ¿cómo se seleccionan los indicadores que pueden dar cuenta de la calidad de un sistema educativo?
